On 8–9 October 2025, Protect Humanitarians organized a workshop in Brussels on Strengthening Protection, Mental Health, and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) for Humanitarian Personnel. The event marked the launch of a Community of Practice on Staff Care and MHPSS, a significant step toward coordinated efforts to protect and support humanitarian workers globally.
Voices from the Frontlines
The workshop brought together humanitarian and health professionals from across the world, including participants from Palestine, Ukraine, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, who shared firsthand accounts of delivering care under extraordinary conditions. Their testimonies highlighted not only the immense personal toll of humanitarian work but also the urgency of stronger, system-level mechanisms for protection and psychosocial support.
Connecting Humanitarian and Health Systems
THEnet participated in the workshop as part of its ongoing commitment to advancing equitable and accountable health systems. Our work is rooted in the belief that you cannot achieve health equity unless the people who deliver care are trained, deployed, and supported in equitable and humane ways. This applies as much to humanitarian responders as it does to health and care workers everywhere.
Both sectors face the same truth: duty of care is not optional. It is not simply an act of compassion, but a matter of system design and institutional accountability.
“Solidarity cannot be selective. It is needed now more than ever — within and across borders, institutions, and systems,” Björg said after the workshop.
