Contribution Analysis (CA) is a promising evaluation approach for complex health interventions, yet its application remains limited. This scoping review examined its use, methodologies, strengths, and limitations in health programming. A systematic search across 15 databases (1999–2023) identified seven relevant studies, covering health promotion, policies, and issues such as nutrition, cardiovascular disease, substance misuse, and suicide prevention. Findings highlight CA’s strengths, including its flexible impact evaluation, decision-making support, and ability to enhance program understanding. However, challenges include determining suitable evidence levels and managing resource intensity. The limited use and varied reporting suggest a need for standardized methods and stronger stakeholder engagement strategies.
