The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) was established to address the chronic shortage of health professionals in Northern Ontario by training physicians with a strong connection to rural, remote, Aboriginal, and Francophone communities. As a socially accountable and geographically distributed medical school, NOSM recruits students from underserved backgrounds and delivers a curriculum grounded in Northern Ontario’s health realities. Through community-engaged learning and electronic distance education, students gain diverse clinical experience across the region. Early indications suggest that NOSM’s innovative, evidence-based model is contributing to a more sustainable and community-responsive rural health workforce.
