Community-engaged healthcare education enhances students’ understanding of social determinants of health, health inequities, and barriers to care while fostering empathy, cultural sensitivity, and advocacy for social justice. Since the WHO introduced the social accountability framework in 1995, institutions have been encouraged to adopt this approach. This systematic review analyzed 76 studies on undergraduate healthcare students in highly developed countries, revealing key themes: social accountability (advocacy, community engagement, identifying health barriers), empathy (challenging biases, cultural competence, communication skills), and shaping the future workforce (professional development, career interests, collaboration). Findings highlight the value of community engagement in transforming healthcare education.
