This paper reports on a series of equity-focused workshops conducted with senior health sector staff in New Zealand to support the government’s goal of reducing health inequalities. Grounded in institutional theory, the workshops addressed systemic drivers of inequity—particularly institutional racism—using ethnicity as a case study. Participants identified structural barriers within their organizations and proposed strategies for change, including adopting Māori health models, increasing Māori participation, and integrating equity assessments into policy and evaluation. The workshops were well-received, fostering greater awareness and commitment to equity. This approach offers a transferable model for institutional change in other health systems.
