Thailand’s progress in reducing under-five mortality (U5MR) aligns with the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG), but its impact on health equity was unclear. This study analyzed child mortality inequalities by socioeconomic strata using census data from 1990 and 2000. Results showed improved household economic status and reduced disparities, with larger U5MR declines among poorer populations. The mortality gap between the poorest and richest quintiles decreased by 55%, and the concentration index dropped by 43%. Factors contributing to this success include economic growth, poverty reduction, expanded insurance coverage, and equitable healthcare access. Thailand’s experience offers valuable insights for countries aiming to reduce child mortality and inequality.
