This paper discusses the need for a “fit for purpose” health professional workforce to meet global health challenges and outlines six strategies for context-relevant health professional education: distributed community-engaged learning, curriculum aligned with health needs, fit for purpose workers, gender and social empowerment, interprofessional training, and south-south and north-south partnerships. These strategies aim to improve community health and maximize the social and economic return on investment through transformational education.
