This study explores the practices of Cuban family physicians that might be applicable to US family physicians, focusing on community-oriented primary care (COPC) and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Cuban family physicians typically see patients in the morning and make home visits in the afternoon, a model not feasible in the US due to structural and financial differences. The authors, who traveled to Cuba, highlight the country’s developed-country health outcomes despite its developing-country economy, with significantly lower health expenditure compared to the US. The study suggests that US family physicians could learn from the Cuban experience and incorporate elements of COPC and CAM into their practices.
