This study examined the lived experiences of rural doctors who often provide care beyond their formal training to meet the needs of underserved communities. Using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, 27 rural and remote doctors attending an international rural medicine conference participated in semi-structured interviews. Analysis revealed the concept of clinical courage, encompassing six key features: serving anyone in need, embracing uncertainty, effectively using local resources, recognizing personal limits, overcoming hesitation to act, and relying on collegial support. These findings highlight the unique challenges and resilience required of rural generalist doctors who deliver essential care in resource-limited settings.
