This study explores factors that influence Doctor of Pharmacy students’ engagement in mandatory and voluntary community-engaged learning activities. Using semi-structured interviews with 15 students, qualitative thematic analysis identified key motivations and barriers. Structured learning activities and reflective learning enhanced engagement in mandatory experiences, while voluntary participation was driven by personal interest, convenience, career development, and advocacy opportunities. Both types of engagement helped students gain a broader understanding of diverse populations and make a positive impact. Common barriers included unclear responsibilities, limited roles, and lack of confidence. Addressing these barriers and incorporating reflection can further enhance student engagement.
