This commentary explores the intersection of sustainability and social accountability in health professions education (HPE), arguing that efforts to ensure sustainability fundamentally drive social accountability. Recent transformations in HPE emphasize aligning education, research, and service with evolving health needs, while also addressing resource constraints. The article discusses two key perspectives: Hirsh et al.’s exploration of clinical educators’ roles and the need to sustain teaching within complex healthcare systems, and Naidu and Ramani’s call for a decolonial, globally inclusive approach to sustainability in education. The commentary underscores the necessity of inclusive and context-specific reforms, advocating for collaborative, community-engaged approaches to shape socially accountable and sustainable HPE.
